Every year, millions of pets go missing—slipping out of yards, dashing through open doors, or getting spooked during storms or fireworks. For pet parents, the fear and heartbreak of a missing pet can be overwhelming. But there’s a powerful, free tool helping reunite lost pets with their families: Petco Love Lost.

What Is Petco Love Lost?

Petco Love Lost is a nationwide, image-based pet lost and found platform created by Petco Love, a nonprofit organization focused on animal welfare. The platform uses facial recognition technology to match a photo of a lost pet with photos of found pets at shelters and in the community.

Whether you’re a pet owner looking for your missing animal or a Good Samaritan who’s found a stray, Petco Love Lost offers an easy and powerful way to help get pets back where they belong—home.

How It Works

  1. Upload a Photo: If your pet goes missing, simply upload a clear photo of your pet to PetcoLoveLost.org.
  2. Facial Recognition Scan: The platform scans photos of pets currently listed as found in shelters or by individuals, looking for a match.
  3. See Potential Matches: You’ll receive a list of possible matches and details on how to contact the shelter or finder.
  4. Create a Lost or Found Listing: If your pet isn’t listed yet, you can create a lost pet alert to get the word out. And no worries – even if your pet crosses state lines, the system still works.

Why It Matters

  • Speed Saves Lives: The faster a lost pet is found, the less time they spend frightened or exposed to danger.
  • Shelter Intake Reduction: Pets are more likely to go straight home rather than ending up in already-full shelters, where there’s an increased risk of disease transmission.

How You Can Help

  • Register Your Pet Now: Even if your pet is safe at home now, go ahead and upload their photo to the platform! If they ever get lost, the system is already prepped to help.
  • Spread the Word: Encourage friends, neighbors, and pet lovers to use Petco Love Lost.
  • Use It If You Find a Pet: Upload photos of found animals—even if you’re just holding them temporarily. You might be the reason someone sleeps easier tonight.
