When a pregnant dog or a mother with puppies arrives at a shelter, one thing becomes clear right away: the shelter is no place to raise a family. The noise, stress, and exposure to illness can put vulnerable moms and newborns at risk.

That’s where you come in.

Fostering a pregnant or nursing mama dog is one of the most rewarding—and lifesaving—ways to volunteer. You’re not just saving one life, but sometimes five, eight, or more. You’re giving them a safe, quiet place to grow strong and healthy before finding forever homes.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re considering opening your home to a mama (and babies!) in need.

🐾 Why These Dogs Need Foster Care

Shelters do everything they can to support animals, but they aren’t ideal for pregnant dogs who need a calm, sterile, stable space to give birth or for newborn puppies with undeveloped immune systems!

These mamas and their babies need quiet, comfort, and consistency—and that’s what fosters provide.

🐶 What to Expect: Pregnant Mamas

If you’re fostering a dog before she gives birth, you may only have her for a few days before the big event, or you might care for her throughout her pregnancy. Either way:

  • She’ll need a quiet, comfortable whelping space (we can help you set this up)
  • High-quality food to support her growing pups (which we provide!)
  • Patience and gentle handling as her body changes

Most dogs are natural mothers and handle birth on their own—but we’ll still be there to guide you every step of the way.

Amy, one of our dedicated fosters shared the following about her experience fostering pregnant mama dogs:

There is this beautiful moment when the mama dog feels safe and relaxed, and they close their eyes while exhaling deeply. I shed a tear every time, because I know I am making a difference in the world, even if some see it as a very small one.

The bond created with the mom in the time before they have the puppies is so important, because her trust in me allows me to be with her during the birth and to handle the puppies afterwards without any stress to or aggression from the mom.

That bond of trust that Amy talks about lays the foundation for a smooth and safe fostering experience—not just for the mama, but for her puppies too.

🍼 What to Expect: Moms with Litters

Once puppies arrive, your role becomes all about providing a clean, safe, and nurturing environment:

  • Clean bedding and daily cleaning
  • Support for the mom with food, hydration, and affection (if she wants it!)
  • Socializing puppies as they grow (handling, gentle sounds, basic routines)
  • Watching for any signs of health issues

Fosters are crucial for early puppy development. Your care during this time shapes how these puppies experience the world.

❤️ A Foster’s Perspective

One of our amazing fosters, Rita, shared this story that reminds us why fostering matters so deeply:

“I got a call from SPCA…there was a puppy dumped behind a dumpster at an apartment complex; she was skin and bones, very emaciated…got her back to health…[After she was] adopted, I got a text from her adopter thanking me for fostering her… she said if I hadn’t fostered her, she wouldn’t have her today.

Fostering makes a difference—one at a time—changing the course of their lives. 💕

Whether it’s a single puppy found alone or a whole litter born into uncertainty, your home could be their safe haven.

🧼 How We Support You

You’re not in this alone. We provide:

  • All supplies (food, crate, bedding, puppy pads, etc.)
  • Support for questions or emergencies
  • Medical care for mama and puppies through vaccinations and spay/neuter
  • Guidance through every stage of the fostering journey

Even if you’ve never fostered before, we’ll prepare you to succeed.

🐾 Is This Right for You?

You might be a perfect fit if:

  • You have a quiet space in your home (like a spare room, bathroom, or closet)
  • You’re home regularly and can monitor their care
  • You’re patient, flexible, and ready to clean up a few messes
  • You’re willing to say goodbye when the time is right—knowing they’re ready for loving homes

Whether you foster once or become a regular “puppy nanny,” your impact is real, immediate, and unforgettable.
